Tasty tidbits II

Ah... So I was making paruppu usili to go with the mor kozhambu that I made for dinner today. Usually, paruppu usili is made with beans or kovakkai (tindora), but I made it today with capsicum, the way my mom makes it. And it tastes as great as it looks... Wanna see?

If you like what you see and wanna know the recipe, leave me a comment.

Here goes people.. The paruppu usili recipe:

For the main dish (serves 2-3)
1. Chop up 2 large / 3 medium capsicums into fine pieces.
2. Heat some oil in a pan, let 1 tbsp mustard seeds burst and 4 red chillis cook along with a pinch of asfoetida.
3. Add the chopped capsicum, salt to taste and cook on low flame till the capsicum turns a dull green from its initial bright appearance.
4. Keep on low flame and proceed to add the paruppu part when it gets ready.
(Hint: Start with prepping the paruppu first!)
For the paruppu part:
1. Soak 1/2 cup of channa dal in lukewarm water for 15 min.
2. Grind it in a mixi with 3 red chillis, a pinch of salt and a pinch of mustard into a smooth paste with the consistency of adai batter.
3. Grease a vessel with a bit of oil. Transfer the ground daal into the vessel and steam cook it (if in pressure cooker, without the whistle) for about 15-20 min.
4. Open the cooker after letting it cool and break the cooked daal which resembles dhokla batter now into tiny chunks using your hands.

For the paruppu usili:
1. Add the dal chunks to the cooked capsicum mixture and mix well.

Lo behold! Paruppu usili!!

Though the procedure seems long, it takes just under 30 min to make the whole thing.

Helpful Hint: Make extra paruppu and store the freezer for future experiments!

Try it out and lemme know how it turned out!
